The Costs to Compete (QLD Season A 2022)

Writer: Ruby CookeRuby Cooke

Updated: Dec 9, 2022

I bet you have heard "Bodybuilding is an expensive sport". I certainly had. But despite my efforts during my prep I was unable to find a comprehensive and objective breakdown of what this expensive sport was actually going to be deducting from my bank account over the course of my season.

Below is a cost breakdown and the total of what my own prep for Season A 2022 looked like. I have kept the costs within the formal brackets of my 30 week prep plus 4 weeks competing. A total of 34 weeks. It is important to acknowledge that this is my own prep and the costs are reflected by my own choices, such as where I brought my bikini from and buying one for each competition. Nor does it list the cost of coaching and gym memberships total in the years before and after competing.

Let’s get into it -

For me the experience was worth it... however, looking at the total here is definitely a little eye watering. There are some things I would do differently if I had my time around knowing what I do know. The necessities being appropriate Coaching, Posing Lessons and Comp Registrations. I would have likely skipped on the hair extensions and buying comp day essentials to the T and picked up a second hand one-piece for $50-$70. Even though the one I ended up with was beautiful. Positively when I do choose to compete again I can reuse my amazing bikinis.

The cost of competing really is something that you should consider when choosing to endure a prep and get on stage. While there are some non negotiables to cost like the actual registration. There are absolutely ways to save when competing like looking into more affordable bikinis plus doing your own make up, tan and hair if you are comfortable to do so. I really hope this breakdown helps with your considerations to compete and knowing what you're truely getting into. If you yourself have any great tips on savings money when competing drop them in the comments below - I'm sure a lot of people would be interested!
