Have you ever wondered how the food you eat transforms into the energy that fuels your daily activities and training? The process is really remarkable, involving complex biochemical reactions that take place within your body. In this blog, I'll take you through process of how food becomes energy, the journey of food to power your every move.


Step 1: Digestion in the Gut


The journey begins in your mouth, where the mechanical and chemical processes of digestion start. Enzymes in your saliva begin to break down carbohydrates, while chewing physically reduces food into smaller pieces. From there, food travels through your oesophagus to your stomach, where more digestive enzymes and stomach acid further break down the food into a semi-liquid mixture known as chyme.


In the small intestine, the real magic happens. Here, the majority of nutrient absorption takes place. Enzymes break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats into simpler forms like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids. These tiny molecules are the building blocks your body can readily use.


Step 2: Absorption into the Bloodstream


The small intestine is lined with tiny, finger-like projections called villi and microvilli, which increase the surface area for absorption. These structures absorb the nutrients and transport them into the bloodstream. Carbohydrates are converted into glucose (a sugar), which is the primary source of energy for your body. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, and fats into fatty acids. These nutrients are then carried via the bloodstream to various cells and tissues throughout the body.


Step 3: Utilisation of Nutrients


Once these nutrients enter your bloodstream, they are delivered to cells in need of energy. Glucose, for instance, is used immediately by cells, while amino acids and fatty acids are either used for energy or are stored for later use. Cells convert these nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a molecule that serves as the primary currency of energy in the body.


Step 4: The Energy Currency - ATP


ATP, the energy currency of your cells, is generated through a series of chemical reactions. The process of converting glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids into ATP takes place in specialised cellular structures known as mitochondria. These tiny powerhouses are essential for energy production. When your body needs energy, ATP molecules are broken down, releasing energy in the process.

The energy produced from ATP powers every aspect of your life. Whether it's a workout, a brisk walk, or simply maintaining your body temperature, the energy derived from your food is what enables you to move, think, and function.
